The Karsten Story The Karsten tradition of quality homebuilding and commitment to satisfaction began in 1965 with the founding of Golden West Homes.
From a single production plant the company, under the direction of co-founder Harry Karsten, grew to become one of the west's largest and most prestigious factory housing manufacturers. When Harry and his wife Joan decided to retire in the early 1990s, Golden West was sold to one of the country's largest manufactured housing companies.
By 1995, Harry and Joan realized all they had needed was an extended vacation, not retirement, so they leaped back into the building business along with other members of the family, opening their first Karsten Homes production plant in Sacramento, California in 1995, then another in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and finally reentering the Pacific Northwest market by purchasing a production facility in Stayton, Oregon in 2001.
Their most recent expansion came in the growing Texas market with the opening of the Breckenridge, Texas plant in 2004.
With their return to the building industry, they brought with them the same reliable teammates and the guiding principals that has served them so well through the last half of the 20th century: quality construction standards, a commitment to 100 percent homeowner satisfaction, integrity and respect for the individual.
They added to these a quest for constant innovation and a popular stylish appeal that has achieved for Karsten Homes the fastest growth of any housing manufacturer in the country.
Today, the company employs over 800 teammates, building nearly 2,000 homes annually. And it's these teammates that are most responsible for the company's success, according to Harry.
"Success is all about treating people right and listening to them," says Harry, "whether it's teammates, customers, suppliers or homeowners."
Harry and Joan make sure they constantly "listen," with monthly visits to each production facility, and regular trips to sales centers throughout their various markets.
Joan, as the company's Interior Design Manager, makes sure that the quality homes constructed for satisfaction are as beautiful and livable as well.
Recently, Karsten Homes launched a new chapter in their storied history by joining the Clayton Homes manufacturing team.
Teaming with this mammoth homebuilding giant brings a new financial clout and administrative backing to the company that will benefit the entire Karsten family by providing improved employee benefits, stronger purchasing power, better home mortgage financing, and wider distribution.
But the Karsten tradition remains unchanged with Harry and Joan still actively involved every day to ensure the Karsten Homes commitment to quality, satisfaction and integrity never waivers.
